Sugarettes most Definitely!

One of my members on the Fat Blasting Boot Camp Group decided to take the 30 Days Sugar FREE plunge! I am so proud of her and I know she can do it! She totally has the right attitude. She posted this very awesome post that I wanted to share with you:

Addiction: A physical need for a habit-forming substance. In physical addiction, the body adapts to the substance being used and gradually requires increased amounts to reproduce the effects originally produced by smaller doses.

I signed up to do the 30 Days Sugar-Free Challenge last night after reading Angie’s blog post. I signed up at about 11:00 p.m., and when I woke up this morning, one of my first thoughts was, “I can’t do this!” And then, they just continued… “Look at everything that I’m going to have to cut out; I can’t do this.” “I haven’t had time to mentally prepare myself for this.” “I shouldn’t be depriving myself like this.” “I should wait a couple more days.” And I probably thought of 10 more reasons why I should not be doing this today.

I wanted to immediately jump out of bed and eat a bowl of whole grain oats with blueberries and some honey; I thought to myself, “It’s not even like I’m wanting to go out and get a couple glazed doughnuts with a large sugar-loaded latte; I can and should still be able to eat my healthy oatmeal.” I still wanted my healthy foods, but nonetheless, all those foods have quite a lot of sugar in them and even though they have all natural sugars, they are not allowed in this 30 Days Sugar-Free Challenge. So, I started cleaning the house to get my mind off of it, and while cleaning, it occurred to me: sugar is truly an addiction, just like he was saying.

“I’m sure when alcoholics think of not being able to drink, the first thing they want is just one more beer, and I’m sure that when smokers think of not being able to smoke, the first thing they want is just one more cigarette. So, it makes sense that when I think of not being able to eat something with sugar in it, the first thing I want is just one more thing with sugar in it. The thing is though, one more beer or just one more thing with sugar in it would probably be just fine, but according to the definition of an addiction, the more someone is addicted to something, the more they have to increase the amounts of that substance. So, that’s why in most cases, it doesn’t stop at just one bight of ice cream, it turns into the whole pint.

For me, it’s helpful thinking of sugar in this way. It has made me realize that I am not just a weak person for giving in to what I used to think of as temptations. I am a person that has an addiction to something, and even though it’s not like I just eat sugar all the time, I do crave at least a little bit every day. I am going to have to work very hard to break that addiction! It’s just not a craving, it’s an addiction. A lot of times once I had given into my “cravings,” I just always felt so pitiful and so weak; I felt like I should’ve been stronger and that I could’ve been had I really chosen to do so. But, if I start of thinking of these cravings as more than cravings, as of a true addiction, I will start thinking more seriously of it. An alcoholic doesn’t just “crave” a beer; they are addicted to it and just HAVE TO HAVE IT!! It’s very hard to say no; that’s how I feel sometimes. And too much sugar is just as harmful to the blood pressure and the heart as is alcohol to the liver, or cigarettes to the lungs.

So, if anyone else feels like I do, then we should help each other and get on this 30 Day Sugar-Free Challenge together. They don’t have a SA “Sugarholics Anonymous” group, but we could kind of start our own. :)

By the way, I opted for 3 egges with spinache and a chicken sausage for breakfast.”
