Quick Nutrition Tips

balanced-nutritionThis weekend I sat down and made up 4 weeks of Meal Plans for the ladies who are taking part in the Lose 10 Pounds for the Holidays Challenge going on at Fit Chick Express forums. I added some of my favorite recipes and also had some pretty simple meal ideas as well.

What I didn’t add was how many servings of each food they were supposed to eat. One reason for this is that every person needs more of some things and less of others. Men and women need different amounts of servings as well.

Here are some approximations that I use when it comes to serving sizes:

Portion sizes tips:

4-5oz of protein (chicken, turkey, beef)
1 string cheese is one serving
1/2 cup of fruit per serving
1 to 1-1/2 cup of fibrous veggies (spinach, broccoli, asparagus) per serving
1/2 cup starchy veggies (whole grain pasta, potatoes)

Make sure to drink at least 6-8  8oz of water each day as well! This will help to flush out all the toxins and keep your system running smoothly!

  1. I always think of a portion of meat being equal the size of your palm or a desk of cards. I think of a cup of raw veggies, like salad greens, being equal to a serving and a 1/2 cup if they’re cooked.

One of my favorite tips is to focus more on fruits and veggies and whole grains and less on meat. The cleaner the foods the better and so much meat these days is of poor quality (did you see the article in Sunday’s New York Times about the woman paralyzed from eating a hamburger that had e coli? Not to scare you, but hey, the better the food, the better you’ll feel).

Just a little food for thought. :)
