Making Your Diet Work for You

There are millions of people in the United States who are considered to be overweight, and many of those who are overweight are actually obese. Being overweight or obese is never a good thing, and can lead to a whole host of health complications, including such serious diseases as heart disease, kidney disease and diabetes, just to name a few. But weight loss isn’t the easiest thing in the world to accomplish, and for many of us it is a lifelong battle to maintain a healthy weight.

Finding the Right Diet for You

If you have decided that it is time to go on a diet to lose weight, you are probably wondering which diet is the best one. After all, every day we are bombarded with new fad diets, each one guaranteed to “melt away the pounds”. Okay, some of these diets do just that, but they are extremely low calorie diets, and as soon as you go off the diet and eat regular foods again, you will see the weight you lost come right back. The best way to lose weight, and keep it off, is to follow a healthy diet that is loaded with all of the nutrients we all need to stay healthy, and make sure that you are eating enough so that you do not feel hungry. This is one of the first things that make people go off their diets – they are never satisfied with their meals.

If you are not sure how to go about getting started on a healthy, well-balanced diet, you can speak with your physician. He or she will know exactly what you need, and will help you make healthy dietary choices that will keep you completely satisfied while helping you to lose weight and keep it off. No matter what type of diet you plan to use, it is important to first discuss it with your physician to make sure that you are getting all of the nutrients you need.

Treat Yourself

Make sure that when you are on a diet, that you allow yourself the occasional treat. This will help to keep you from binging, which often happens to those who are on extremely low-calorie weight loss diets. Actually, there are all kinds of healthy foods that also make delicious treats, such as nuts (unsalted is best), fruit, dried fruit, diet soda, and even dark chocolate, which is loaded with healthy anti-oxidants. With all of these great snack options, and more, you should have no problem at all sticking to your diet, and you’ll see those pounds falling off in no time at all.

  3. Just a reminder that more recent studies are showing that diet soda may actually slow your metabolism by affecting your thyroid gland, thus slowing your weight loss.

  4. The most important thing to remember before starting any “diet” is that your weight loss is going to depend on calories in vs calories out. If you are ingesting less calories in ice cream than you are burning, you will still lose weight. The converse is also true.

  6. Nice post, Angie! Too many people jump on to the latest fad without considering what will actually work for them, and they can sustain. It’s good to see encouragement towards realistic diet plans- it’s all about the lifestyle change rather than the quick fix!

  7. Hi,

One of the keys to what makes dieting work is the fact that the body is programmed to maintain – not to lose. If you reduce your daily calorie intake in order to try to lose some weight; the body actually perceives that reduction as a threat of starvation. Means by eating less so as to lose weight; our bodies react by trying to maintain weight!

  8. I totally agree with the post. If you want to start a diet a good point to start is talking to your physician about it.
One of the core components of a diet – or a healthier life, is persistence. Either for your meals or for a workout it’s important in all aspects of your life.
The worst mistake you can do is start a “extreme” diet or start fasting because you feel uncomfortable and stop it after one or two weeks. Have you heard about a jo-jo effect?

I highly recommend, like Angie says, treat yourself e.g. a dark chocolate (but not on a regular basis :-)

  9. You are absolutely right about the best diet for weight loss. The best diet is the one that you can live with. I have found that most of the diets out there work but not in the long term. Someone could cut carbs for 6 months, but no one can cut carbs for a lifetime. Why not just replace simple carbs with complex carbs. As you have rightfully pointed out, people need to think long term. Short term fixes are just not sustainable.

  10. A diet needs to be something that the person can live with, and it has to work. Anything that promises a quick fix should be avoided. Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to weight loss. Look for something that you will not dread, and stick to it. The weight loss starts slowly, but it builds over time and you can keep it off.

  12. Paramalink you are absolutly right! Diets do work short-term but for long term change you need a lifestyle transformation. You are what you eat and to be honest the best diet is to eat LESS and move MORE. Simple but effective.

  13. Before developing a diet plan, you should consider how much that would be effective for you. People differ from each other. I did lose weight quite well but the same thing didn’t work for my friend. It may be difficult to find the best path tho. Good luck!

  14. Good info! I think people just have to really pay attention to their bodies and should only eat when they are hungry. Sometimes you are really just thirsty and then they overeat. It’s small things like that that can make big changes I think.
