Have You Mastered The Turkish Get Up?

Because I haven’t and to be honest, I haven’t really even tried it much. The first couple times I struggled and thought it was dumb, so just gave up. THEN I talked to Sandy Sommer and he told me that he starts out his clients doing Turkish Get Ups and I thought he was completely CRAZY! BONKERS! It’s so hard, why would he choose that KB exercise first? But maybe I just thought it was so hard because I wasn’t doing it correctly.

So  I decided it would probably be a good thing for me to learn how to do it the right way, so I asked Sandy to put together a video demonstrating how he teaches his clients with no KB at all. Instead he uses a shoe…..interesting….

Check out the video below and then let me know if you have mastered the Turkish Get Up yourself or any tips you might have!

  1. I’ll confess – I haven’t yet tried that! However it’s now on the scheduled list of Ways To Bring My Family Together Via Exercise. I’ll keep you posted!

  2. I read this this morning and watched the video..I did part of it, laying on the floor and just raising one arm holding a weight and that was tough, I’ll try the rest of it during the week, but I could feel it.

  3. I have yet to try it again, but will soon! Good luck Barbara!

    Great Job Sallie!!

  4. These are tough but I like them. I think the hardest bit is getting up from kneel to stand. I usually grunt a lot around that time….lol

  5. The TGU is one of my most favorite exercises! I LOVE IT! A few things that have helped me, as well as the clients I teach it to:

    1. Pack the shoulder
    2. Elevate the “pull thru” leg prior to moving into the half-kneeling position. This ensures there is tension through the core. If you can’t do this yet, then make sure to squeeze your glutes and brace your abs as you bridge up, prior to the pull thru.

I feel the TGU is a great drill for hip and shoulder mobility! I teach it in several progresions. The first being a get-up sit-up, then a half-get-up, then there are a ton of drills to add to that!

    Great stuff, Angie!
