Breakfast Important for Fat Burning!

Work From Anywhere

I get very frustrated with my clients when they tell me they don’t eat breakfast. If you think about it, your body has been in a fast for anywhere from 8-10 hours! That is a long time for your body to go without food.

I hear a lot of “But I am not hungry”, “I just forget”, or “I don’t have time”. The reason you are not feeling hungry is because your metabolism has slowed down. If you make breakfast a more regular thing, I can guarantee  that you will wake up feeling hungry! Set a reminder on your phone or put up a sticky in your kitchen until you make it a habit. If you are short on time, choose something quick and easy, like a protein shake.

One of the very first things I do when I get up is have some type of food. Most days its a protein shake, just because I do my workouts right away in the morning and I need to have some food in my system and protein is the most important.

My body is so used to food right away, I usually feel hungry right after I climb out of bed. Some people might think this is a bad thing, but actually its not. It means that my metabolism is at work and I am burning calories.
What is metabolism and why would we want it to be working?
Metabolism is the amount of energy (calories) your body burns to maintain itself. Whether you are eating, drinking, sleeping, cleaning etc… your body is constantly burning calories to keep you going, and this is what we want to have happen to reach our fat loss goals. When we burn calories, our body looks to food to fuel itself and without proper nutritents, it will begin to eat away at our muscle instead of our fat.

By adding breakfast in the morning, we are giving our bodies a jump start to fat burning and helping it to maintain the muscle we already have. This in turn helps us to burn more calories throughout the day. And isn’t that what we all really want? Of course we do!

  1. I couldn’t agree more. And it’s important to have a decent amount of calories in the morning. I usually have some oatmeal (kashi w/protein), soymilk and fruit. It keeps me full until lunch!

  2. Yum!! That sounds like a good breakfast! Love Kashi!

  3. Great post Angie!

Breakfast is by far my largest meal of the day and the meal that I enjoy the most. I’m pretty routine and have a bowl of oatmeal with loads of fruit and at least 3 whole eggs in an omelet with veggies. Plus I take my multivitamin and krill oil at that time.

The mornings that I do cardio when I first wake up I have a glass of warm water with 5 to 10 grams of glutamine to preserve my muscle mass then I eat my large breakfast the moment that I walk in the door.

It definitely revs up the metabolism and sets the stage for the rest of your day.

  5. There was a study released this summer that backs up Angie’s argument for eating breakfast EVERY morning.

The study compared a “Big Breakfast” or BB diet plan with a low carb / Atkins style diet plan.

    The Results

    After four months:

    * The low carb dieters lost approximately 28 pounds
    * The BB dieters lost about 23 pounds

Both groups did well, losing between 6 and 7 pounds per month.

    After eight months:

    * The low carb dieters had regained an average of 18 pounds. This produced a net loss of 10 pounds over 8 months – an average of 1 1/4 pounds per month.
    * The BB dieters lost another 16 1/2 pounds during the maintenance phase. This produced a net loss of 39 1/2 pounds – an average of 5 pounds per month.

    Way to go Big Breakfast

  6. Too many people seem to equate losing weight with enforced starvation. I have heard many people proudly tell me “I haven’t eaten since yesterday!” and then seem shocked when I am not impressed. What you say is correct – one has to eat to lose weigth – just eat clean and eat at the right times. Breakfast is vital to a healthy metabolism and everything it brings with it.

  7. Having a proper breakfast is vital to giving the body energy to last through the day. Many people skip out on eating breakfast for various reason and may feel exhausted by the time it is late in the afternoon. Breakfast is the most important meal and it should be healthy, not just coffee and donuts.
