Another Perspective On Eating Before Early Morning Workout
You may remember this recent post, Do You Eat Before Your Early Morning Workout? Douglas of the IfLife.com called me out on my post, which is totally fine with me, as I know that I do not know everything and that some things work for some people while other things work for others and I always want my readers and clients to hear about all the different options and make their own decision.
Here is what Douglas had to say,
” I just wanted to mention that your statement about slowing metabolism may be false. Read specifically http://www.theiflife.com/2008/11/05/eating-more-meals-does-not-speed-up-your-metabolism/ for more information.
I felt the same way you do, that you need to eat breakfast (and 6 times a day, too) to get the metabolism going, but recent research may indicate that that may be a false statement. There’s also been some interesting results for people who have been trying Intermittent Fasting (IF), so I wanted to share that knowledge with you. I’ve also seen a study on exercising in a fasted state, which I believe showed that it can have a positive effect on weight loss. Unfortunately, I don’t have that link handy.I just felt you might be doing a disservice to your readers by telling them that missing breakfast slows their metabolism and that if you have no fuel, you’re only burning muscle. Fat is stored fuel, and if you’re eating correctly, your body should be using that for energy, not muscle.”
Like I said, I am not here to prove that I am right, but to give you another opinion or option that might be more suitable for you and your lifestyle. I believe that Brad Pilon’s Eat Stop Eat book is a very good book and I know some people who have tried his diet and its works for them! As long as you find what works for you…that is what is important.

Six times a day sounds like a lot for the average person. However, when it come to those who work out a alot and are kind of like triathelets, your body constantly need nourishment in order to keep up with you.

I followed intermittent fasting for a decent amount of time(9+ months) with no adverse effects whatsoever. I agree that 6 meals a day is a bit much for most – mainly your average Joe/Jane. But as expected, most “trainers” tell them that is the only way to lose fat and elevate metabolism. What a crock! No wonder most fail to stick with their fitness goals.

I hate the idea of fasting and trying to exercise. Talk about being weak and light headed. I eat egg whites and whey before my morning workouts otherwise I think I would pass out. Typically if you’re not hungry in the morning it means you’re eating too late at night… and for me I AM STARVING in the am. That whole fasting idea is not something I promote to my clients or athletes that i train.
